About

I live in New York City and I'm surrounded by books all day and when I go home I have more books waiting for me. Read my "About" page on top to see what I mean. I just want to share my book experiences and my love of all-things-books, with hopefully the occasional review thrown in. If you wish to contact me, the address is polishoutlanderATgmailDOTcom

The Secret of Kells: The Movie

Ok, I know I already posted about the NYICFF but I have to mention now the movie The Secret of Kells, which I went to see on Tuesday on a whim, and Josh actually joined me. The NYICFF was running lots of showtimes for this movie, especially after it got nominated for an Oscar, and then I saw that there were still a few days left to see it here in NYC so I decided to go.

And I am SO glad I did. What a beautiful movie. It’s just so different from what you see these days. I loved the way the movie used shapes, and the colors were gorgeous. Even the juxtaposition of shapes in certain settings was interesting, just a bit hard to describe in words.  And the music! Oh the music! I loved the character of Aisling and how she was portrayed. It was such a simple story but the animation made it so rich. The movie is actually based on the actual Book of Kells.

Here are two trailers (the second one being longer, and gives you more plot):

I hear that they’re going to be showing the movie in other cities soon and that there is plan for a DVD later on in the year. According to various websites, it opens April 2nd in LA, the Bay Area, Chicago, and Washington D.C. I will have to get the DVD. The music was in my head all night long and it still is, especially this song:

The words are (with translation):

You must go where I cannot,

Pangur Ban Pangur Ban,

Nil sa saol seo ach ceo
not in this life but fog,

Is ni bheimid beo
we live there,

ach seal beag gearr
but little short stay.

Pangur Ban Ban Pangur

Nil sa saol seo ach ceo
not in this life but fog,

Is ni bheimid beo
we live there,

ach seal beag gearr
but little short stay.

(Pangur Ban is the name of the cat that you see in the video)
