About

I live in New York City and I'm surrounded by books all day and when I go home I have more books waiting for me. Read my "About" page on top to see what I mean. I just want to share my book experiences and my love of all-things-books, with hopefully the occasional review thrown in. If you wish to contact me, the address is polishoutlanderATgmailDOTcom

Moon Called by Patricia Briggs

Mercy Thompson’s sexy next-door neighbor is a werewolf. She’s tinkering with a VW bus at her mechanic shop that happens to belong to a vampire.  But then, Mercy Thompson is not exactly normal herself … and her connection to the world of things that go bump in the night is about to get her into a whole lot of trouble.

So I guess this is what you would call my first foray into the adult world of the paranormal reading area. I’ve read the YA stuff. But not any of the adult books or series that have been out there for some time. And I’ve read great things about this book and author and series.

But I was sort of left feeling indifferent when I finished this. I don’t have the urge to go out and read the next book in the series. It had a good plot, but for some reason the ending confused me, and by ending I mean the whole explanation of how and why of the werewolf packs and the rivalries. I just got very lost but I kept reading, thinking that if I do pick up the next book in the series, it might not matter.

As for the characters? Well, none of them stuck with me. The alpha wolf sort of drove me nuts with his constant need to control her. You know as I write this, I have to go back and refer to the book because I don’t even know what their names were. So that just really gives you an idea of how this book really did not stick with me. Usually I can still remember names weeks after I’ve read a book.

What am I trying to say here? Do I have anything to add to all the other people’s reviews and thoughts? Probably nothing. I will still continue with the challenge. I got two more books to try out so we’ll see. But if those two don’t do it for me, I might have to give up on the genre in general. Except for the YA stuff. But then again, even within the YA stuff there are few titles/series that I really enjoy because the stories and the execution of the stories were done well and with some thought. With all that is out there in the YA paranormal genre, it’s hard to come by the select “gems” that are out there. I can name a few that were pleasant surprises for me, and would totally recommend them to other people. And people who know me, know how subjective I have become. So I am not totally giving up hope on the adult genre, because I think I still might stumble upon something.

Maybe that’s enough of my general rambling.

And if anyone is interested, here’s a great interview with the woman who is Mercy on the cover: Embodying Mercy Thompson In Person and In Paint

And I found the UK cover and the cover for Issue #1 of the Dynamite comic:

  • The first book was “meh” but the second was really great. I think the second book is my favourite.. or the 4th. I know I didn’t like the 3rd. It’s sort of on/off depending who the supporting characters are. Hang in there. I hope you like the second one as much as I did!

  • I felt the same with about the 1st one. If the library didn’t have the rest I probably wouldn’t have continued with the series. I’ve really liked the rest of them though. I liked the 3rd one because it had the fae (and I’ve really enjoyed books with the fae).
